Do you know the number one song? A chart, a radio show, or a scene could once locate a listener inside a cultural moment other people recognized and contested. Everyone Sings Alone Together asks what happened to that orientation.
Sabino Marquez investigates the social work carried by popular music. Sounds and scenes could register labor, class, war, technology, and civic pressure. A listener’s encounter depended on places to rehearse, fail, acquire recognition, and follow an authored path through culture. Venues, record stores, radio, zines, and touring sustained that surrounding world.
The manuscript examines how streaming and platform incentives alter the conditions in which culture forms. The inquiry reaches beyond the supply of songs to the rooms, relationships, and routes that let a sound become a common encounter. Consequence Field Theory provides a way to investigate participation, belonging, and the publics that music can help compose.
Readers who recognize a change in how music locates them gain an account of the supporting world they have been hearing. The book asks what happens to cultural judgment and collective sensing when those conditions weaken. Listening becomes an entry into the larger question of how a society recognizes what is happening to it.
